Cisco Cius is an ultra-portable device weighing just 1.15lbs (0.52kg) that extends the productivity benefits of Cisco collaboration applications to a highly secure mobile platform. In addition to full telepresence interoperability, Cisco Cius offers HD video streaming and real-time video, multi-party conferencing, email, messaging, browsing, and the ability to produce, edit and share content stored locally or centrally in the cloud.

Based on the Android operating system, Cisco Cius is an open platform for communication and collaboration whose form factor and applications are designed to more securely connect employees on-the-go with the right people in real-time, and to provide those workers with the ability to access and share the content they need from any place on the network.

Cisco Cius offers IT professionals new options when it comes to equipping mobile workers with computing devices. Through virtual desktop integration, Cisco Cius offers flexible computing options with cloud-based services, providing dramatically lower capital costs and cost-per-user for desktop maintenance.

Businesses can also tap into the growing Android developer community that is building business-class productivity applications with appropriate IT controls. The combination of applications and flexible computing options provides a compelling alternative to today’s PC-on-every-desktop paradigm.

Mobile data traffic is expected to more than double every year through 2013 and in keeping up with their buying streak Cisco is buying Starent Networks. The transaction should be complete by mid 2010 and the company will become Cisco’s new Mobile Internet Technology Group giving the company a major leg up into the mobile data market.

Cisco has proven its capability to successfully move into new markets such as VoIP and server virtualization and become a major player quickly.

At Kennedy Communications we are excited to see the possibilities this could bring. Our company was founded in the wireless industry almost 19 years ago with 2-way radios, cellular phones, and pagers. Since 1991 we have been experts in wireless, voice, and data communications. We see this as an opportunity to expand our Cisco portfolio as they move forward with this acquisition.

While most companies are aware of security threats from outside their network, many have no idea of the possibility of an inside threat.

Common “Unintentional” Mistakes:

• Unauthorized application use: 70 percent of IT professionals believe the use of unauthorized programs resulted in as many as half of their companies’ data loss incidents.

• Misuse of corporate computers: 44 percent of employees share work devices with others without supervision.

• Unauthorized physical and network access: 39 percent of IT professionals said they have dealt with an employee accessing unauthorized parts of a company’s network or facility.

• Remote worker security: 46 percent of employees admitted to transferring files between work and personal computers when working from home.

• Misuse of passwords: 18 percent of employees share passwords with co-workers. That rate jumps to 25 percent in China, India, and Italy.

So how do you protect your important company data?

First you have to define a network Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). This document is a set of rules that details network usage and restrictions. A good AUP should state what a user is and isn’t allowed to do on the network, reference a more detailed security policy when needed, and state the consequences if the user breaks the AUP.

Second you must perform regular audits. Many times a company will set policies regarding security and network use but never audit to insure that these rules are being followed.

As you see in the statistics above, internal network abuse is a very real threat. These basic steps are just the start to protecting your company’s network and securing one of your company’s most important assets.
